English

📚 I Subscribed to Kindle Unlimited for My Kid’s English Books—But Ended Up Hooked Myself

We were at the airport, about to head off on a family trip.
While waiting to board, I noticed two Korean girls quietly reading English books in front of us.
No tablets, no whining—just reading.
I was honestly impressed… and a bit envious.
Meanwhile, my own kids were discussing tteokbokki (Korean rice cakes) with great enthusiasm.

I thought, “Okay, I need to step up my parenting game.”
So I searched for ways to expose my kids to more English, and that’s when I discovered Amazon Kindle Unlimited.

At first, it was for my children’s English reading.
Now? I’m the one using it more.

👉 What Is Kindle Unlimited?

Kindle Unlimited is Amazon’s eBook subscription service.
For around $11.99/month, you get unlimited access to thousands of books.
You don’t need a Kindle device—just the app on your smartphone, tablet, or PC.
Think of it as the Netflix of books.

👶 I Signed Up for the Kids, Honestly…

I was hoping to find leveled readers and easy chapter books for my kids.
It does include some well-known series like Dr. Seuss, National Geographic Kids, and I Can Read.

But let’s be real—many of the famous children’s books aren’t included.
It felt a bit like going to a buffet and finding nothing you actually want to eat.

📖 And Then I Started Reading…

So I browsed around for myself… and I found gold.
Short self-help books, bite-sized psychology reads, indie romance novels, fantasy series—way more interesting than I expected.

There’s even a large selection of comic books and graphic novels.
Great for kids, right?

Well… the font in English comics is often tiny, especially on smartphones.
If you don’t have a tablet, you may end up squinting like me.

👍 What’s Great About Kindle Unlimited

  • Unlimited reading for one flat monthly fee
  • Huge range of genres (romance, fantasy, thrillers, self-help, comics, etc.)
  • No Kindle device needed—use any device with the app
  • Easy way to build an English reading habit
  • Surprisingly good for adult readers!

👎 The Not-So-Great Bits

  • Most bestselling books are not included
  • Limited selection of quality children’s English books
  • Comic book fonts are too small for small screens
  • Content quality varies widely—you need to dig
  • Less useful if you’re not confident in English

🙋‍♀️ Who Is This For?

  • Parents introducing their kids to English reading
  • Casual readers who love genre fiction or light nonfiction
  • Anyone who wants to read 2–3 books a month
  • People building an English reading habit without spending a fortune
  • Curious readers who enjoy sampling before committing

✍️ Final Thoughts

I signed up for Kindle Unlimited to help my kids—but now I’m the one using it most.
If you’re looking for an affordable, low-pressure way to read more English, or
build a bilingual reading habit for your family, this is a great place to start.
